My Project

In the Spring, students in fourth-grade focus on a literature unit titled "The Land of Stories." Those stories involve a dragon which inspires students to use their imaginations. In my Fine Arts class, students explore multiple art media throughout the year. Sculpting a dragon's eye helps to bring the story to life.

Creating through sculpting is beneficial for all students, but is especially helpful for those who learn through touch.

Sculpting the dragon's eye is a step-by-step process using three small balls of clay, a large flat marble, and paint. Once the eye is assembled and dried, students paint the clay. The glass part of the eye creates a fantastic realism that motivates students to write their own dragon stories.

In lower grades, I use various clays and play doughs to encourage hands-on learning about colors, textures, and sculpting methods. Having a ready supply will provide opportunities for an entire school.
