My Students
My students are struggling readers that need to overcome their difficulties with reading. Incorporating technology via Skype and aligning our sessions with related books motivates my students to work harder and reach for their goals. Watching them transform into readers is priceless!
My students are from a suburban area in Pittsburgh.
The school consists of kindergarten through sixth grade, approximately 350 students. Although not a wealthy district, teachers make every effort to utilize technology to energize our students' learning environment. As with all districts, we are making every effort to include common core standards within our instruction, yet funding is being cut. It is an ongoing struggle to find materials (especially relevant books) that engage the students, as well as meet their individual needs. I feel fortunate to have found The Dolphin Project and to allow my students the opportunity to participate in such a worthwhile program, but am in need of related reading materials to support our classroom goals. What the students can gain from these stories can influence them for a lifetime on so many levels!!
My Project
My students and I had the good fortune to pilot the "Dolphin Project" last year and will once again be participating during the 2012-2013 school year. The teaching method is designed to augment student reading capabilities. Students participating in this program are reading below grade level who must overcome reading difficulties that curtail their motivation to read. The foundation of the program involves jump starting student interest in a current subject through real-time Skype sessions and then capitalizing on that awareness through related readings. Students experienced team work and became leaders in their school. Participants spread their knowledge through conversations with classmates, via fundraising activities, videos and newspaper articles (local and out of state). The project also enhances student writing and communication skills. I requested a Nook tablet, leveled readers and novels to further engage and motivate my students to work towards their individual goals.
My most intriguing observation is not only do my students gain an appreciation for reading, but also an awareness of the world.
They come to realize they can each make a difference and positive impact on the wildlife environment through their actions.Imagine the possibilities if everyone would adopt the philosophy of "tell a friend". Our planet would be kinder & fairer.In the process children gain confidence in their abilities.
