My Students

Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. Many of my sixth graders do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school. They live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language.

In Season 2 Episode 2 Dr Who said that books are the best weapons in the world!

He was so right. My students need new books to combat illiteracy.

My Project

My class has a significant number of at-risk and bilingual students. I have students, particularly males, who are in danger of failing the key areas of reading and math. I need something different. Traditional reading programs are not working. I need something that will appeal to uninspired non-readers. I plan to use books about Dr. Who. (Dr. Who is a long running sci-fi series that features the Doctor and his companions traveling through time and space via the TARDIS to ward off threatening aliens). I plan to open my classroom during lunch recess and begin reading Doctor Who: Four Doctors and let the Whofanatics check out and discuss the other titles. We have nothing like these books in our classroom library and I know these new Dr. Who books will help ignite the imaginations of my students and help overcome the very real barriers to illiteracy.

My students often cannot find books they want to read.

I am asking for copies of twenty-six different Dr. Who books including Doctor Who: The Third Doctor, Volume 1, The Heralds of Destruction. These desperately needed new books will attract new readers who know the TV series. Please donate and help my student students.
