The Doctor Isn't Scary! Preschool Dramatic Play - Doctor's Office

My students need toys representing various pieces of medical equipment, including lab jackets, stethoscopes, and pretend shots, along with new books to support our learning.

My Students

I teach in a developmental preschool program, where I serve children who may have a variety of communication, social/emotional, cognitive, and motor needs. They come from all over my large, urban school district, and have needs as diverse as their backgrounds.

My students are an amazing and inspiring bunch of kids, and I am SO lucky to teach them.

With my classroom team, I work hard to meet the needs of my students with the materials that we have. Special needs preschool is often a "forgotten program". I gather materials and resources for my students from a variety of sources, and feel true joy when they master the skills we work so hard on with those materials.

My Project

My students love the dramatic play center! I look for ways to make this center "real" for them by basing the topic of this center on the interests of my students. We have had SO many discussions on the doctor's office over the past month, and many of my kids do NOT like visiting the doctor!

Through this project, I will be able to teach my students that going to the doctor is a good thing!

These materials will be used to start a Doctor's Office dramatic play center in my developmental preschool classroom. We will be able to read the books in a whole-group setting and take turns caring for pretend injuries in the dramatic play center. With adult support and direct teaching, my students will be able to learn some health skills by taking care of each other.

When you're 3-5, the doctor's office can be a scary place! By introducing my students to the tools doctors use and sharing age appropriate books related to the doctor's office, I hope to alleviate their fears AND help my students learn empathy and kindness.
