This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Dear Martin is a social justice book that is written from the perspective of a young Black Boy caught in the crosshairs of the justice system. I teach these same young Black boys and girls, many of them who have been in this very situation or not far removed from it. After the state tests are completed, we have a unique opportunity to make instruction what we really need it to be: real world, real relevant, real life. I want to use this novel to have poignant discussions about choices that we have and opportunities that may be missed.
I also want to talk about the choices that my students do not have- like the choice to be a minority.
This novel study will give a safe space to have these discussions and see the other side of life from the safety of our classroom. This novel will make a difference in the lives of many students. It may even save one.
