The Day in the Life of an Engineer!

Help me give my students items to use for our monthly STEM challenge time and weekly math project time, with: Scholastic News magazine, report covers, stencils, ink, and so much more.

My Students

I'm fortunate to be part of a school that strives for excellence. We meet students' needs with rigorous teaching strategies, and expect only the best from our students.

My school is proud to be a Leader in Me school that works on taking the 7 Habits of author Steven Covey, making them age-appropriate, and working them into our school campus so that students begin to see their campus as a way to show leadership.

Leader in Me is not a curriculum, but rather a way of doing life on the school campus through awareness of how we learn and grow, and how we speak and treat one another.

Students learn the habit of solving conflicts, and then they become mentors for others. This is just one way the Leader in Me program looks on our campus. Students take the 7 Habits that are taught to them and begin to think of ways they can take ownership of their campus through leadership. Whether it's a 5th grader helping a 1st grader to read, students setting goals and overcoming academic obstacles, or students seeing a need to clean their campus, these are all ways that the 7 Habits teach students to lead.

My Project

I am requesting items that will be used by my students on a weekly and monthly basis. Once a month, students will become engineers, wear a science a jacket, and have a challenge to take on. One month, they will have a challenge of taking the requested red solo cups, and large popsicle sticks and building the tallest free-standing tower using those supplies. Students will learn the engineering process of how to plan, create, design and build. The requested Scholastic News magazines will be used to research articles of famous engineers, and use the requested report covers to gather their research prior to the day they do their challenged. The requested ink will be used to print their collected research.

Also, once a week, students will be doing a "Math Challenge", where they will take the math standards taught to them that week, and have a hands-on challenge to complete.

For example, one week we will learn about multiplication arrays, and students will use the requested Cheez-its to build an array, which also can lead to building for the distributive property we learn in 3rd grade. I am excited for my students to have some hands-on activities while learn their 3rd grade standards, and practicing what it is like to be an engineer, using problem-solving skills, and team work.
