The Cycle of Growth: From the Ground to the Table

My students need a compost kit, peat pellets, grain grinder, bread maker, air popper, and three 2.25 gallon storage containers.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

Academic integration is the goal; education needs to make a connection between “real life” and school work. I teach Teen Living to approximately 200 seventh and eighth grade students in a rural, low income/high poverty community (2/3 of the student body receives free or reduced lunch benefits). This grant would allow my students to combine ecology concepts (composting, planting, and harvesting) with food production/preparation into a group of hands-on units of discovery.

Without this equipment (compost kit, peat pellets, grain grinder, bread maker, air popper, and three 2.25 gallon storage containers) these units of discovery will not be possible.

With this variety of equipment, experiencing ecology in the kitchen will be an actuality. By using food preparation techniques to reinforce the science/ecology concepts, the students can relate practical, hands-on lessons with their science curriculum.

We need your help to make this vision possible. Your assistance with this project will ensure that my students make the connection of ecology/science to “real life”. This will be accomplished by giving them a practical application for the standards being addressed in their science classroom.
