My students need help covering the cost of bus transportation so they can go on a field trip to learn about how climate change affects the Great Lakes.
Our school is located in a small, tight-knit rural community in Central Wisconsin. We have 150 students in grades 6-8 that come from a variety of backgrounds; some have traveled the country and some haven't left the county.
Each day, our six teachers work to ensure students experience learning and the world so they are equipped to take on the challenges of the future.
Our students' ability to interpret and process in-depth information and tasks is truly inspiring. By introducing them to complex issues like climate change, we are seeding solutions for our community and future.
My Project
This project will help cover the cost of bus transportation for a field trip. At Apostle Islands National Lake Shore, students will work with experts from the National Park Service, Great Lakes Visitor Center, Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission, DNR, local artists, UW Extension staff, and US Forest Service to learn about the affects of a changing climate in our very own state. The greatest impacts, which can be seen, are occurring up by Lake Superior.
Last time we taught this expedition, all students shared their learning at UW Marathon County, and we had four students present their learning at the Chicago Botanical Gardens.
From these connections, our students' documentaries were used at an International Climate Change conference. The Botanic Garden made a documentary of our students' work.
