My Students
My incoming fifth and sixth-grade students are a vast assortment of personalities and talents. I have watched them grow over the past two years as the younger siblings of some of my past students. Most are developing readers who need more time building stamina through the use of longer reading passages as well exposure to a variety of characters and themes that allow them to make the connections to the text.
My Project
Have you ever read a book that surprises, mesmerizes and takes you on an emotional roller coaster all at the same time? Well, The Crossover will do this for my students. It's a high-interest book that I plan to integrate as a whole class reading this fall when students return back to school.
During the pandemic, paper novels were cast aside in lieu of short stories that could be posted electronically.
Now, students are returning to in-person learning, I'd like for my students to rediscover having a "actual" book in hand that can be used for cloze reading. Students will annotate the text to deepen their understanding thus creating vibrant discussions between blossoming critical thinkers.
