My students need STEM kits to investigate the design and impact of 4 types of renewable energies! Student groups will be able to build, research and present on the topic.

My Students
My middle and high school students are inquisitive, make strong connections and ask great questions! Oftentimes, it takes hands on labs, which require thinking outside the box to push them to the next level.
I teach in a gifted selective enrollment school on the south side of Chicago.
Many of our students have overcome obstacles in their personal lives to get to where they are today. Our students push themselves to be the best, participating in challenging coursework, selective summer programs at local institutions, and planning for college and beyond! I see it as my job to educate them both to do well in a collegiate environment, but also to allow them to be conscientious citizens, making current and future decisions that are positive for our environment.
My Project
I am requesting 4 different STEM kits that focus on renewable energy and financial literacy. I envision my students using these to bring a financial aspect to Environmental Science. One of the major factors in adopting new technologies is the cost to consumers, so students will do research, and use the kits to model the cost scenarios of adopting the various technologies. Beyond start up and maintenance costs, they will also be asked to take tax rebates and future conventional fuel cost scenarios into account. From this research and building their models, students will present to each other on different energy types. From these presentations, we will be able to determine which energies are best for different situations.
This project will allow students to use hands-on investigations to determine cost-benefit scenarios for energy sources.
Students will use the model as a jumping off point, as they calculate their financial feasibility in different scenarios. Ideally, this will mirror decisions they will make as they mature. Determining cost-benefit scenarios is incredibly important as they pay for college, move into a career, and especially as they become homeowners. This is a stepping stone for their future.
