Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are some kids whom you just can't get to read... until you put Manga in their hands! Manga, to you, are comic books from Japan. To my students, they are the coolest books in the universe!
I run a school library that caters for kids from Pre-K through 8th grade. A couple of months ago, we purchased some Manga from the 'NARUTO' series. These titles have become the most popular books in the library. Kids who rarely came to the media center are now daily visitors. NARUTO has boosted reading from the third grade all the way up to the eighth grade. Over half of our highest-circulating 50 titles are NARUTO stories.
We currently own NARUTO installments 1-27. I'd love to purchase numbers 28-39, plus Manga from the BLEACH series, which should appeal more to the 'reluctant readers' in middle school.
Why buy books for a school library?
They'll be available to kids from EVERY classroom! Think about it: you get more bang for your buck.
Why this school library in particular?
The school is in an inner-city area, and the majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. For 80% of our kids, English is a foreign language. The kids at this school could really do with a helping hand!
NARUTO and BLEACH will get these guys reading - I guarantee it. Once the books have been on the shelves a week or two, I'll send you circulation statistics and kids' book reviews to prove the impact that these titles are having!
