Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The joy of a crowd can be enhanced by the spirit of a sole player on the field or a pep rally, the mascot. Our student Juan, from Student Council, was chosen to be the school’s mascot for our football games and pep rallies. Although Juan is the lone man in the suit, other Student Council Members also support and assist him during his performances at both games and Pep Rallies.
These students spend an incredible amount of their time planning for, investing in, and setting up for some of the school’s largest events. Their determination and spunk are clearly evident to the other students, parents, and other community and business members. Each of these grand events always features the mascot at some point, and the crowd goes wild.
One of the downsides of being a mascot in Texas, is the heat. Temperatures can soar into the triple digits easily. We realized that our mascot costume has been put through the ringer over the years and an upgrade was an obvious need. By adding a cooling system to our mascot costume, our students can participate in the activities for longer period of time without the risk of injury or heat exhaustion.
It may be useful to make a couple of comments regarding why or why not mascots matter. Mascots provide a symbol that can be a focal point for a fan community. There is research in psychology that that has studied the wearing of team symbols following wins and losses. Researchers, unsurprisingly, find that team logos are worn more frequently after victories than after losses.
When students feel like they are appreciated and their school is a fun, engaging place to be, they will perform better academically.
In Their Own Words
There is an incredible feeling that comes with creating excitement in the stands at our High School Football games. These performances can be quite physically demanding, and particularly during the summer months when temperatures can rise into the low 100’s. As students who would like to help ramp up the pep, we could really use a new and improved mascot uniform and one that has an air conditioning unit.
With a new costume and materials that add some much needed cooling and comfort, we students will have a pleasant opportunity to work as a team and provide school community support that is much needed in our inner city school. Student Council students are dedicated to bringing appealing activities to our campus. By doing this, students will also be fine tuning their Leadership Skills that will give them great tools for progressing into their adult lives.
Inner City schools often have a difficulty in gaining parent involvement. Fortunately, our Sporting and Pep events bring lots of parents to see us play or perform. There are a variety of ideas about sports fandom, and almost all emphasize the importance of factors such as team history and fan community. These are important because it is often the historical accomplishments of a team that provide a basis for fan communities.
