Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in an extremely diverse community that is made up of many nationalities, unique family structures, and differing abilities. We strive to teach the whole child and work each day to dismantle a system of education that limits the achievement of Students of Color.

The students I have an honor to teach each day, are passionate about the world around them.

Even at five years old they recognize the racism and inequality that exists in the world. They question why the police hurt "good people" when they are supposed to hurt "bad people." They wonder if they are pretty because movies and books don't have people that look like them. They voice that they want equality for everyone regardless of their race, ethnicity, and gender. They are fearful of what could happen to them due to the hatred and inequities in our world.

These are the worries students bring into my classroom each day and when they do I provide them the space to talk about it. This conversation starts in kindergarten and I am proud to work at a school that provides students with the safety and opportunity to speak their minds.

My Project

Throughout my first two years of teaching, I have implemented many different projects to allow my students to connect with different cultures and identities throughout the world.

This year for Black History Month the students in my class participated in a project titled "Black Made That." For two months, each student researched a Black Inventor and then recreated their inventions and patents using recycled materials.

They then presented their inventions and posters to the sixth grade students at our school. Throughout this project students asked questions about cultural appropriation, racism, and more. During these two months, the many students of color in my classroom were able to see themselves represented each day and they were proud.

As I continue to grow as an educator, I want to allow each child in my classroom to see themselves represented each day, and not only during the months we have dedicated to varying races and ethnicities. In order to do this I need to increase the diversity in my classroom library and provide students access to materials that will allow them to explore their own identities and to keep having tough conversations everyday.
