"This land is your land, this land is my land." Those words echo in my classroom as my students sing along to the popular song. With this project, I want to provide the background for this song. I want my students to learn about our country's Constitution, history, and what it means to be a citizen.
The students in my classroom are high achieving 2nd graders who love to come to school.
Our community school is close knit and we enjoy the ever changing population. My students have diverse cultural backgrounds and interests, but we all are excited to earn from one another. We enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing our knowledge with each other. With this project, I am hoping to help my students build a solid understanding of how our country came to be and what it means to be an American. I want the to understand why this land is your land and this land is my land. I want them to understand that the citizens of America help to shape our government everyday and that their voice will be an important part of that process.
My Project
It is important for my students to develop into great citizens. In order to do this, I am asking for books on our Constitution and our country's history. The True Books series, in particular, is a popular one among my students. The text is accessible for all readers and the photographs and other text features present the content in a clear, kid-friendly way. These resources will be used by my students to gain an understanding of how our Constitution works and how it has changed over time. We will use the easel and paper to record our thinking. The easel will make it easy to reflect on our discussion the next time we meet as our notes will be saved in one place. I want my students to create iMovies about the Constitution. We will use the file boxes with dividers to keep our project materials safe as we are working. We need computer speakers so that my student's presentations can be heard through out the classroom.
This project provides my students with valuable resources that will help them understand our Constitution.
They will get to explore the ideas of citizenship in fun and engaging ways as they create iMovies. I am excited for the opportunity to help my students develop into great citizens who know their country's history and are proud to be Americans.
