The COMPASSION Project in K/1st: Compassion In Action

Help me give my students the tools they need to learn and practice compassion in our classroom, and the world.

My Project

This project is designed to create opportunities for learning and practicing compassion in a space that is, 1. designated as a calm space devoted to celebrating compassionate acts, 2. provides engaging literature, puppetry, and role play opportunities to help students see the world through the eyes of another person, and 3. supports our youngest students in engaging activities to learn about what compassion is, how to show it, and how to recognize compassionate acts when they see them.

My vision for this project is called "Celebrating Compassion in Action" - this project will provide the materials needed to create a NEW Compassion Center space in our classroom.

How will our students learn to see the world through the eyes of another person? The books requested in this project are carefully selected to create opportunities for students to learn about the differences and sameness which is central to learning to see through the eyes of another person. The Jonti-Craft Literacy Couch will create a cozy space for their learning journey. I've also requested role-play items. For example, we will use the play glasses to talk about the 'lenses' we see the world through, and how that can be different for different people with different experiences. The Childcraft Deluxe Puppet Theater will provide a space for students to practice compassion.

Students will learn to show compassion to others, and also to themselves by engaging in their Daily Activity book, Compassion Activity & Literacy center, and using the SEL workshop materials.

After engaging in our Daily Compassion Workshop Center students will be invited to recognize their classmates acts of compassion by drawing & writing about the compassion they witness and awarding classmates special trophies at the end of each week in a celebration that will will measure student's success in understanding compassion.
