My Project
In our classroom, we believe compassion starts with understanding—and sometimes, understanding starts with simply having a safe place to sit. This project will bring in a special chair that becomes a symbol of kindness, reflection, and support. Whether students need a moment to regroup emotionally, talk through a conflict with a peer, or just feel seen and valued, The Compassion Chair will serve as a designated space for emotional healing and connection.
This chair isn’t just furniture—it’s a physical reminder that every student matters, every feeling is valid, and taking a break or helping someone else is not just okay—it’s encouraged.
The Compassion Chair will be used in peer mediation and empathy-building activities. Students will take turns sitting in the chair during morning meetings or reflection time, where they’ll be asked to share how someone else might feel in a certain situation. We’ll practice listening deeply without interrupting, learning to really hear another person’s experience.
Students will be encouraged to invite others to sit in the Compassion Chair when they notice someone is upset or having a hard day. It will become a place to offer kind words, write thoughtful notes, or check in on a classmate. We'll also use it during role-plays and problem-solving sessions to practice comfort, patience, and kindness in real-world scenarios.
We will track how often the Compassion Chair is used and for what purpose—peer conversations, emotional check-ins, or quiet reflection. Students will also reflect weekly in journals or class discussions about how they’ve shown or received compassion. We'll know the project is working when students begin to independently use the space to care for themselves and others without prompting.
