This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What if...kids were excited to read? What if...students took the initiative to write their own stories independently? What if...art classes were offered to students on an ongoing basis and were focused on students’ interests? The Comic Book Club is our way of making these things a reality!

The Comic Book Club is a group of 50 students in 3rd through 5th grades who are excited to expand their reading, writing, and art skills through the medium of comic books and graphic novels.

Our school received Title 1 funds and many students come from impoverished and immigrant backgrounds. The Comic Book Club will prepare my students to think critically about issues, ideas, and topics that are important to them. I will encourage creativity by providing an environment where it is good to think differently and invent new possibilities. I hope to spark their imaginations and help them design new worlds in which they learn to solve problems creatively.

My Project

I want to create a safe, nurturing environment for The Comic Book Club students, where they are eager to come read and learn at recess and after school. The bean bag chairs I'm requesting would help me set up a corner dedicated to The Comic Book Club. The book rack would provide an easy way for students to review and check out comic books and graphic novels for inspiration. If my students have a dedicated space for The Comic Book Club, they will be more eager to access it on their own and utilize materials more independently.

Your help in providing these materials will allow me to establish The Comic Book Club's safe environment where I will increase my students' literacy and love of reading.

The space will engage students in creative thinking and collaboration with peers, help students develop visual art skills, and provide a place where students can explore their own interests through hands-on learning experiences.
