The Comforts of Personalized Learning

My students need an alternative to the 1980s chairs that are in our rooms. The 3 stools and 2 bean bag chairs will allow the ADHD students to feel less confined.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember sitting in straight-back, hard, and uncomfortable chairs from the 80s? If you were a child that was jittery, do you remember your teacher saying, "Stay in your seat," but knowing it wasn't possible? This is the biggest challenge for young and active boys (especially children with ADHD).

Luckily, I am looping from second to third grade with my students and I'm trying to eliminate some of the issues that I noticed.

I have two children that were diagnosed with ADHD and 15 out of 23 are boys. As many of us are boys, we like to be active, to move around, and to have choices. Additionally 70% of my class is Hispanic and English is their second language. These students need to have quiet places and get away from the noise and the bustle of the classroom activities, because projects, stories, etc. often take them longer to complete because of their need to translate the activity in their heads, understand what it's asking, translate it back, then apply what they have learned.

My Project

Our school (my classroom specifically) is transitioning from a traditional school to a personalized learning school, which means that students are not inhibited by the constraints of desks and silence. This will help my students' with engagement, on-task time, project based discussions, and collaboration to enhance learning. We are working on FL!PPING the classroom to give the individual control and pace over the the students. In order to accomplish this, I need comfortable home-like areas, where the students feel free to move around and collaborate with one another. Unfortunately, we are currently constrained by desks and exceptionally uncomfortable chairs. All of the furniture in the classroom (with the exception of pieces that I have purchased) have been in the school since before the oldest teacher was teaching there. The archaic structures and furniture from the traditional classrooms are not helping the student's with 21st century skills and I am hoping to change this.

I hope that these materials will help my students to think of the classroom as a home, where they can sit where they choose and where they are given exactly what they need to thrive.

My students need to be given materials that allow them the maximum opportunity for success. What does that mean? It means stools that allow them to move and groove without feeling bad about and a place where they can focus on their work and not the challenges that normally would distract them (ADHD/language).
