The Comfort Project: Spreading Love to Bereaved Families

Help me give my students supplies to create personalized care packages and host a comforting tea event to show compassion and support for bereaved families in our community.

My Project

In recognition of Bereaved Mother's Day—a day dedicated to honoring mothers who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a child—my students are undertaking a meaningful, student-led service project to spread compassion and comfort throughout the month of May. This initiative, inspired by the Service Stars mission and students like A who collect and distribute personal care kits to those in need, will empower my students to make a real impact in their own community. As part of the project, students will create and send personalized cards and thoughtfully curated care packages to families grieving the loss of a child. Each package will include items carefully selected to bring peace and emotional support: a grief journal, a specially designed memorial butterfly ornament, a memory candle, cozy socks, herbal tea, a comforting mug, a self-care hygiene kit, tissues, a small plush for comfort, and calming items such as lavender sachets or stress-relief putty.

We are seeking funding to create these care packages and handmade cards as well as host a quiet tea gathering to bring warmth and connection to grieving families.

For our students—who all attend a school where 100% receive free and reduced lunch—this project offers a rare opportunity to lead with empathy, generosity, and purpose. It gives them a hands-on experience in service learning while showing them that even small acts of kindness can bring hope to those in deep sorrow. Just as A finds joy in seeing how her care bags help others, our students will discover the healing power of giving back and understand their ability to be a source of light in someone else’s darkest hour.
