My students' lives have been turned upside down! School closed mid March with no warning to family or staff. I was not able to send home supplies that would be needed at home. The district provided the students with a laptop and access to the internet, if needed.
We are trying our best with distance learning.
My students have been working hard to stay in contact with me through Zoom, text, and phone calls. They were provided technology to support online learning; however, many of my students do not have basic school supplies, nor extra money for additional food or supplies. While I am grateful the district provided laptops for our students, many do not have the support at home to fully engage in distance learning nor the necessary supplies needed to complete assignments. It is not developmentally appropriate to have 8 and 9 year olds on computers all day.
My Project
My classroom has a fantastic library that my students had access to all day. They loved going to the book bins and selecting new titles and trying out a new genre or author. Now that they are at home, they do not have access to new books nor a wide selection. The school is closed, the public library is closed, and my families do not have extra money to purchase new books.
There is nothing quite like curling up with a great book.
During this uncertain time, books not only provide a learning opportunity, but comfort and an adventure. My students need books in their hands. They have access to stories online, but it is simply not the same.
