If you entered into my classroom you would be charmed to encounter a bright-eyed, hard-working group of nineteen first graders always eager to learn and try their best. You would be delighted by a group brimming with talent and promise. First grade is a very important year where students really work hard and become functional readers and writers. In this day and age of testing, school has a tendency to be more about meeting certain standards than about enjoyment and finding creative, exciting ways to learn new things. I believe that learning should be fun, creative, and attuned to the whole child. I believe that the more inventive and challenging the classroom is, the more the students will grow and learn. I believe that, even though my first grade students live in a very poor part of Brooklyn and don't have much monetary wealth, their education should not be deprived of richness. It is for this reason that I ask you to help bring the gift of music to my classroom. Learning to play an instrument can not only help children with their musical and creative development, but is also invaluable in their academic growth as well. With the gift of new xylophones, our class could have the incredible privilege of making learning fun as well as developing important musical skills. Can you imagine the look on the faces of a group of kids who aren't used to having a whole lot when a box of shiny new xylophones arrives? How much more fun would math class be if we could play along with our counting! How much more fun would phonics be if would could sing our word families? The gift of xylophones would not only fill our classroom with music, but also with joy, excitement and potential. Who knows, you could help foster the next world-famous musician!
