Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Classics: Halloween,Valentine's Day,& Birthdays. Four-year-old's consider these extra-special days & enjoy related stories. King Series readers fit the bill!
Classics: The Little Engine That Could,3 Billy Goats Gruff,& Where The Wild Things Are. They're a few of the classic tales students must know.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Our student body is becoming more diverse & I must ensure that cultural celebrations, such as Halloween & Valentine's Day, are included in my instructional program.
The same can be said of classic literature. "I think I can. I think I can." The mantra from The Little Engine That Could (1954) is part of our modern day vernacular. Cultural literacy encompasses so much and really begins in our early years. The titles I've requested are tales everyone should know. Classic stories are also a rich resource for vocabulary development & reading comprehension skills.
My Project
The King Series (6-pack bundles) requested are about classic celebrations (birthdays, family parties, etc.) children enjoy. I'll be able to work with students in small groups with a book in each child's hands. Our literacy program provides just 2 of each title. Flannel board stories are a great way to tell young learners a story. It allows me to introduce vocabulary piece by piece & students to participate in the group storytelling & later work with the materials individually or with others. Titles include: The Napping House, Where The Wild Things Are, Three Little Kittens, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Lady With the Alligator Purse,& Brown Bear, Brown Bear. Nursery rhymes are a fun way to acquire new vocabulary & practice rhyming words. The Tell-A-Story Nursery Rhyme Kit will provide a hands-on opportunity for Humpty Dumpty & Little Miss Muffet to help my students on the road to success. All of these materials will create an interactive, motivational environment focusing on language.
Classic celebrations & classic literature are two areas of high-interest that provide a wealth of learning opportunities that will lead my young learners to an exciting, successful future.
The requested materials (King Series readers, classic flannel board stories, a flannel board, story/literacy sets, & a nursery rhyme kit) promote language development & cultural literacy. Both are important components of academic success & I say, the earlier, the better!
