The Chromebook Nook

My students need two Chromebooks to create an interactive technology center with the intentions of learning about math and financial literacy.

My Students

If you look at classrooms at different periods of time, there are always resources that are luxuries that become necessities. Computers, projectors, and smartboards were once items that classrooms were lucky to have, but now they're almost in every school. Portable access to the Internet is crucial.

Who are my students?

I consider every child I taught art, subbed for, had for the year to be my student. I have eighteen curious four year-old students in my pre-kindergarten class and older ones who walk pass my door and wave hello because I've made their day at some point. I also have future students who aren't old enough to be in school yet, but one day, they will. I teach and live in a tight community where I walk down the street will most likely bump into a family I know. Most of the children come from immigrant families who values education greatly. Most are from households who have two hard working parents who do their best to provide the best quality of life for their children. I have been blessed with the opportunity to give their child the best, and I have no intentions giving anything less.

My Project

Times have changed. It's changed before and it will change again. Our classroom needs to stay updated and relevant to ensure the success of the students in it. I look around the room and realize how fortunate I am to have resources that I didn't have back when I was in school; computers, laptops, smart-boards, printers, CD players. My students learn and interact with lessons on the smart board. The Chromebook will help keep what they learn as a group consistent with their independent reinforcement activity. The new technology will introduce our students to math and financial literacy concepts. They will utilize the games practicalmoneyskills.com, PBSkids, as well as other online resources that will promote their financial literacy. My students know how to use the technology, they've seen it at home used by their parents and older siblings. If the chance is given for it to be implemented into our classroom, I have no doubts that it'll be utilized to its fullest potential.

I've always been hesitant to request high-cost technology materials.

I began to realize that when computers first came out, teachers during that time must have felt the same way. These aren't tools to replace a teacher. Instead, they're tools to supplement learning. My students have benefit greatly from your help. The Chromebooks will create a new learning center that will enable my students to learn concepts they otherwise wouldn't be able to with the resources the classroom doesn't possess.
