This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Starting high school can be the most exciting time for any young freshman. Transitioning from middle school to high school is not always smooth. Research shows that freshmen need the extra support and life skill lessons to help them cope with the environment, become leaders, and influence others.

Each year we have 500+ incoming Freshmen.

It is a regional high school in suburban Maryland, that includes students from military to lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Our population is 95% African-American, 4% white and 1% other. Many freshmen are academically sound, but there are several who are considered at-risk because of high suspensions in middle school and/or low reading and math scores. Our students are capable of being academically successful, but as freshmen, some of them need that added piece of motivation to succeed. These workbooks will help my students think about and reflect on where they are in life, where they want to be, and how they can achieve that goal, by incorporating the 7 Habits.

My Project

I am requesting workbooks by Steven Covey on The 7 Habits of Effective Teens. This workbook focuses on issues young teens face or will face as they become young adults. These workbooks are designed to help students succeed in and out of the classroom. For 5-10 minutes a week, students will reflect on their lives, develop leadership skills, and set goals to help them to succeed. It is a wonderful tool and a powerful motivator for all students. Each week, I can use this workbook in our Freshmen Academy advisory lessons.

Right now, my county is recovering from a serious economic deficit.

My school has lost money over the past two years because of low enrollment. I am asking you to donate to this project so I can have a toolbox to teach character education and life skills. The workbook is designed to make the lessons quick, fun, but effective. Students will remember the lessons and use them throughout their high school career. If you want to change a school climate, start with your freshmen.
