Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is an incoming 3rd grade dual language (English-Mandarin) class of about 22 students in District 1 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Most of my students come from low-income families and my school is a Title I school. Many of them receive free lunches based on their socioeconomic status.
Despite the many challenges they face, such as little food at home, my students are always so smiley, kind, thoughtful, and so generous.
They will save their snacks and surprise me by leaving snacks such as an apple, a banana, or a pack of cranberries on my desk! Their words, "You need brain food!" makes my heart melt! They are intelligent, fun loving, creative, and spontaneous.
I am looking to provide my students with hands-on, fun, and meaningful learning experiences. I need your help to make that possible.
My Project
My students have been wanting me to start a chess club during their recess time. They love fun learning and are so eager to pick up chess skills and be chess players. I am requesting a chess demonstration board set, along with 12 chess sets with chess boards and basic chessmen storage bags to start our Chess Club.
I believe that playing chess will help my students become more focused, improve their visual memory and attention span.
Chess also favors the “if–then” thinker. “If I move here, then my opponent may move here, here, or even here.” That’s logic and critical thinking in action!
I am hoping that by having my students play chess, they will get to understand that if they lose their focus, they might lose an important chess piece; and that the chess skills they picked up via fun chess playing will help them later on in their life!
