My Project

My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade with a variety of learning needs. They attend a public school in an urban area in Pennsylvania. I teach at a Title I school where many of my students participate in the free school lunch program and Backpack Initiative food on the weekends. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn everything, so they can be successful in the future.

Students enjoy leaning back in their chairs, but a chair tipper can easily tip their chair too far, fall over backward, and hit their head.

In the middle of many lessons, I have observed a student leaning back in their chair, with only two legs of the chair in contact with the floor. Mixed with our waxed tile floors, I have had students each year headed to the nurse.

Students often lean back in their seats because the chairs are hard and uncomfortable. They're expected to sit in them for long periods. Leaning back is their way of stretching and releasing excess energy.

Cantilever chairs in the classroom are harder to tip backward, making them safer. They’re also very comfortable, ergonomic chairs that have a “floating” feeling when sat in. It will give my students the flexibility to sit forward when working at their desks or to ‘lean back’ and relax when listening or participating in group activities, allowing for more sustained concentration.

We had a project funded for two chairs of this type recently, and they have been a great addition to our classroom! We would like to transition to comfortable chairs a little at a time. These chairs can make a difference, two by two.
