The Case of the Missing Library Books

My students need new books for our school library. It's common for library books to go missing throughout the school year, but many of them are our most popular titles and need to be replaced.

My Students

My elementary students are a diverse group of students that include children from many different countries and backgrounds. Our school has a large percentage of needy students that receive free or reduced price lunch. We are a community school that includes a wide variety of families and experiences within the Charlottesville community. The library is the heart of a school and I want my students to feel loved, accepted, and free to explore and learn about everything are interested in and hopefully discover new ideas and experiences too.

My Project

There are many reasons students may lose a library book, sometimes it means they just really wanted it, but often times it's because of circumstances they can't control. My students often need to leave their homes quickly for difficult reasons, they may need to move to another home for financial reasons or to be safe. In these circumstances books get left behind. Students are not able to afford to replace a library book, especially with a hardcover or library bound edition.

Unfortunately many of the books lost are some of our most popular titles, the library budget doesn't stretch far enough to replace those titles and also purchase new books for the collection.

Books from popular series go missing that then leaves a hole in the series. If a student, especially a student that may be reluctant to read in the first place, gets into a series of books, you never want them to come to a point where the next book is missing!

Replacing these 50 books will return about half of the books that went missing this year but will make a big difference in preserving the library budget for new purchases. Please help us solve the mystery of the missing library books by returning these wayward titles back to the shelves so they can be rediscovered and read again. We are requesting books to replace those that students have lost. Our titles include The Stonekeeper's Curse, If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Graveyard Shakes, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and many more.
