Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Don't you realize that we're boys?? What's with all the chick lit?" It's daily reading time in my class. Even when my students don't verbalize the statement above, their apathy is evident. Everyday, the same students waste as much time as possible pretending to look for a book. They fool no one when they sit down with thick Shakespeare books and stare with glazed-over eyes at the same pages day after day. I teach at a military themed high school in NY. Out of my 120 students, 110 are boys. My independent reading library is all too small, and all too biased. Most of my books appeal to girls. My boys, the majority in my classes, are overlooked and left waiting desperately for a book that interests them. Meanwhile, precious instructional and learning time passes. They only have months before the English Regents, and they are years behind their suburban peers in reading levels. Please don't let them fall through the cracks!! You can help. All my students need is literature that appeals to THEM. We need books about boys, books that reach out to boys, and books that will help my students navigate their all-too-demanding adolescent years. Furthermore, my students who are still learning English while learning how to read struggle most. They love graphic novels because they learn vocabulary with the images embedded in the text. This donation is not just about books. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenage boys all over feel just as they do. Boys are all too often overlooked and suppressed when it comes to emotional problems. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard. Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature and a new world of opportunities!
