Imagine coming to school with no school supplies. Unfortunately, this is the scenario all of my student's face daily. Their families are unable to replenish school supplies when needed making learning and completing assignments difficult.
My students are currently attending a school where 98% of the students are eligible for free lunch based on the income of the family.
I teach a class that combines 2nd and 3rd grade special needs students into one classroom. Due to the grave lack of resources in the community, most students, regardless of general education or special education classification, are at least one grade level behind. Classroom environment is essential to an effective and productive day, especially when teaching special needs children.
Due to the recent budget cuts in my city, classroom supplies were put on the bottom of the schools priority list. This leaves my students with insufficient materials to complete assignments and leaves me with insufficient materials to prepare interactive lessons for my students.
My Project
The supplies I am requesting include: pencils, folders, erasers, markers, copy paper, to glitter for art projects. These supplies will relieve the pressure my students' parents are experiencing due to the economic hardships they continue to face in this poverty stricken neighborhood. Activities within every subject area would be more productive and beneficial to my students' academic growth, as the resources needed will be readily available. These supplies will allow my student's to be prepared to learn everyday, and remove the shame of not having their own school supplies. It will also remove the strain of having to purchase supplies every month in order to supplement the grave deficit within my schools budget.
Something as basic as having a pencil to bring to school is often a struggle for my students.
Often times they are so distressed by being unprepared for school everyday they hold their heads down when it is time to do work. I attempt to offset this experience by buying the listed supplies, however, replenishing these supplies has proved to be an expensive task. Having a wealth of supplies to last through out the year for all of my student's will build self- esteem in all of my student's.
