Help me give my students transportation fees for the trip of a lifetime to see the places where American History and American Government happened and are still happening.
My students, in general, come from low-income, nontraditional homes where education is not always valued. However, our students come to school every day. Our average daily attendance is over 95%, and our students yearn for the structure and stable family atmosphere that our school offers them.
My students are proud of what they know and proud of where they come from, and they break the rules when it comes to traditionally impoverished students.
My students succeed at a higher level than the research says they should, and they are constantly looking for a challenge. This means that, as a teacher, I have to look for ways to challenge them and keep their interest in a quickly changing world.
My Project
We have planned a five-day trip in June 2019 for juniors and seniors who have successfully completed civics to visit Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA. Approximately 40 students have registered and paid their deposit to attend the trip.
This trip will allow my students, many of whom have never traveled out of the state of Michigan, to see some of our nation’s most important governmental and historical locations.
They will also learn more important information about our nation’s Founding Era and how our government works. They will build upon the knowledge they gained in my class.
The trip will include chartered bus transportation, four nights lodging, entry into George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theatre, the United States Capitol, the National Mall, the National Constitution Center, Independence Hall, and other sites, and meals including a visit to Medieval Times and the Washington, DC Hard Rock Cafe.
My students have studied our nation's founding as well as the functions of the United States government. Taking them to both Independence Hall and the nation's capital will allow them to be in the place where history happened and continues to happen. They will connect the lessons learned in the classroom to the memories made on the trip and, hopefully, be encouraged to participate in the governing of their nation in the future.
