Help me give my students an engaged classroom through 3D printing, plant life cycles with a plant shelf and grow light, and light electronics explorations with Snap Circuits.
It was a hard decision to leave the very best sixth grade A Team teaching partners, but if I was to grow as a teacher for my students, I needed to learn something else, a new angle. So I went with trepidation, forty miles down the road, and stepped into a STEM classroom. I’m old. I don’t know tech. I made myself uncomfortable, put myself in a room of gadgets and standards I didn’t know, shed a few tears, and pressed on and in. Guess what happened? This old bird learned a few things, a lot of new things. I discovered the angle I was looking for. I discovered how to create a more engaged classroom with meaningful learning opportunities.
The only problem is, I’m headed into a fifth grade classroom, at a new school, without the tools needed to dramatically improve that engagement I went on a quest for.
I’ve been told the student demographic can be a tough one, by more than one person. But what if school became more real for young people? What if learning was happening accidentally, intentionally? What if we made more out of our school experience? That’s my aim and goal, to bring more real life and learning to the classroom. The filament for the 3D printer I have requested will help do just that, and they will be at the disposal of all three sections of fifth grade.
