Help me give my students items like a laptop computer, beanbag chair, classroom rug, and pencil sharpener for an area where they can calm down and reflect.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
As I grow with my second graders and get to know them better, I have learned that many are experiencing severe trauma. While I have been constantly improving the classroom academically, the mental health corner has taken a back seat.
Although the school year nears the end, I am still reminded how much mental health matters.
Many of my students need a place where they feel safe but can calm themselves during the day as needed. The rug and bean chair will provide a comfortable area for students to calm themselves. The laptop will provide the students in the calming area to navigate calming strategies through interactive online programs as an option. This helps to support a paperless environment which adds to our sustainability beliefs. I believe in giving my students every tool they can use to be successful individuals. This does not stop with their academic goals.
While education is the primary focus, being knowledgeable in strategies to combat mental health issues is just as important. To be an effective student and learner means you have to be in the right frame of mind. Allowing students to navigate through strategies that will help them mentally is, to me, an important part of learning.
