The Busy Bees Learn How to Read!

My students need Reading Center activities to increase independent reading and word work while I teach small Guided Reading groups.

My Students

Literacy is the basis for all learning. In kindergarten my students learn to read so they can someday read to learn! Urban education has so many rewards, but class size and teaching in targeted small groups is always difficult. Our classroom needs meaningful independent reading activities.

Before my non-profit company stepped in to turnaround this public school, it was statistically the most violent elementary school in Philadelphia.

My students are bright, fiery and energetic kids that are confronted by more real-life situations than any 5 year old should be. Our school is now a safe haven, and where they have the opportunity to change their future. My job is to help them understand the importance of reading everyday, everywhere and as often as possible.

My Project

Our classes are 28 students each, and while I have the opportunity to teach Guided Reading in small groups it is very difficult to create independent center activities to make sure every minute of instructional time is used! The materials I am requesting will have students listening to a story all on their own, with the control to switch to a new book if they choose. They will also practice rhyming and sight words with fun hands-on games while I can conference in with other students in the classroom. The materials will rotate through every class in our grade. When learning is fun, everyone wins!

Teaching a community of learners that need exposure to literacy the most makes teaching kindergarten in an urban setting the best job I could ask for!

I believe in the strengths that a child-centered classroom can bring in providing an engaging learning atmosphere for all students. Your donations to our school and my classroom will impact over one hundred students this year alone. Please help the Busy Bees of Room 108 and other kindergarten students learn how to read!
