My Project
Many of my students have been taught the myth of the “starving artist” but there are many successful career paths they can choose using a degree in art. The Arts as a whole are a big part of Arkansas’ economy and by creating marketable objects like zines and t-shirts students will better understand how the working artist has a true entrepreneurial spirit. Creating zines and t-shirts will provide them with inventory to market at 2nd Friday Art Night in Little Rock as well as at other pop up events hosted and organized by young college students in the Little Rock area.
I would like to implement a program teaching new business skills by helping students to self publish their art and writing projects while learning some financial literacy -for this project they will need to open a bank account, understand how to charge customers correct taxes and how to submit them leading to a better understanding of economics and financial literacy.
We are a public charter school located inside an industrial building, a few blocks from the main location of the Central Arkansas Library System where they host 2FAN (2nd Friday Art Night) as a part of the gallery walks. My art club students have been attending to help artists and sell their own original work like paintings of as a part of their community service hours of which they need 75 to graduate.
In order to create this project we are asking for color ink, paper, and a long arm stapler as well as one classroom iPad for graphic design and layout as well as some screen printing supplies and mini canvases and paint. These supplies will allow for us to print a large number of zines and shirts and mini paintings.
