I teach third grade at a diverse, Title I school in southwest Florida. Sixty-one percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from numerous cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Through lots of hard work, our school continues to help our students succeed.
My students love science!
They love to read about it, learn about it, and they especially love our school's monthly STEM challenges! Hands-on learning makes science accessible to all students, regardless of ability in other subject areas!
My Project
A big part of our science curriculum in third grade involves understanding how plants and animals (such as insects) are affected by the environment and each other. This can be tough for third graders, especially when the only examples they see are pictures in their textbook. For this project, I am requesting an ecosystem kit so that we can raise plants and butterflies side-by-side in our classroom and see how they grow and change.
Being able to see, touch, and observe real living things will make a huge difference in my students' understanding!
Hands-on learning is the best and most effective! In addition to the real growing experiences provided by this kit, it also contains lessons with hands-on examples of animal adaptations, another challenging concept for third graders.
Thank you for helping me bring this real-life experience inside my classroom!
