The Building Blocks Of Early Math/Science Education

My students need a large set of a variety of wooden unit blocks with accessories to promote cognitive development and imaginative play in our preschool classroom.

My Students

Our preschoolers ignore the current "set" of unit blocks. Imagine trying to build with odd pieces in a "set" that lacks enough of any particular shape to build a creative structure! We desperately need a set of blocks that inspires our children to create and to make discoveries.

From low income families, the disadvantaged preschoolers in our classroom need the rich experiences that an opportunity to work with a quality set of unit blocks could provide.

Block play, literally, contributes to building the foundation of a child's education, helping to develop: VISUAL PERCEPTION, MOTOR DEVELOPMENT, COMPETENCE, SUCCESS, SELF-ESTEEM, INITIATIVE, COOPERATION, NEGOTIATION, COMPROMISE, RESPONSIBILITY, LEADERSHIP, PROBLEM-SOLVING, REPRESENTATION and SYMBOLISM, COMPARISONS, CLASSIFICATION, DIRECTIONALITY, SEQUENCE, DIVERGENT THINKING and LOGICAL REASONING. Also, through block play, the children discover the MATH/SCIENCE concepts of Area, Size, Order, Space, Shapes, Numbers, Mapping, Patterns, Measurement, Fractions, Estimation, Addition, One to One Correspondence, Seriation, Weight, Height, Gravity, Balance, Cause and Effect, Symmetry, Action/Reaction, and Spatial Concepts.

My Project

If our classroom had only a quality set of blocks with complementing imaginative accessories, like play animals, vehicles, signs, trains, etc., our children would have all the materials they needed to develop physically, socially/emotionally, cognitively and creatively! But, because our block area is seriously lacking in attractive materials, our already disadvantaged children are missing out on great learning opportunities.

When I taught in a classroom that was well-equipped with unit blocks, the amazing structures that children built were adorned with signs that they would make to "describe" what they had created.

In addition to the all of concepts listed above, block building also lends itself to literacy! Please give our disadvantage preschoolers the staple of unit blocks to give them every opportunity to grow and to develop to their full potential! Thank you for your generosity and support.
