This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Did you know that the Bronx has the highest rate of childhood asthma in the United States? One project we started was to measure the air quality around our school. This multigrade project has allowed our scholars to become citizen scientists and explain what causes air pollution and the effect of air pollution on our health. In the 8th grade, my students delved deeper into why black and brown children are affected the most. We explored the history of the Bronx and found that redlining and racism by design allow for a disproportionate amount of low-income Bronx families to feel the brunt of environmental racism. We analyzed air quality data from our school's sensors as well as sensors from each borough and around the world. We collected other data along with this including, temperature, humidity, air pressure, dew point, and precipitation to determine if any of these factors could impact air quality.
This year I would like to take our investigation further by allowing students to use portable air quality sensors in their own neighborhoods to collect data in real-time.
Using this data students will be able to propose a redesign of their block/neighborhood in order to improve air quality. Working alongside Fordham University we will then present these ideas to the community at the end of the school year.
Please help my students do science in the real world in their communities by providing these air quality sensors. Students should also feel that they too have a voice and can use it to enact change at the community level.
