This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Emotions drive us, my students are no different except that emotions are not something they learn about or are taught about.
My students attend a public school in the South Bronx, the school is surrounded by housing projects and the has approximately 500 students, 98% minority students.
The school is an elementary school PreK- 5th grade. 11% of the students are English Language Learners and and 21% are receiving Special Education services.
My Project
My students struggle everyday with their emotions, many of the girls suffer from issues of self-esteem. As the schools only guidance counselor I have noticed that they are connected to literature that helps them understand these complex emotions they are exploring. A revolving library filled with literature that speaks to their experiences can help acknowledge those feelings. I have requested several copies of the American girl series The Feelings Book, The Smart Girls guides, and The Care and Keeping of You series. Many of my students have never been to the American Girl Place & Cafe located on 5th Avenue in NYC. I have heard from many of my minority students that they dream of going to the store and cafe. With their families limited incomes the girls feel that the dream is not within their grasp. These books will help them believe that they are worthy of the same access, advice and knowledge that those girls whose family can afford to take them to the store and cafe.
Last year with my limited resources I purchased my own copy of the The Feelings Book and the book was worn from the girls reading it and passing it to a friend.
The need is their and my worn out copy is indicative of how much.
