This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

SOCIAL STUDIES COMES TO LIFE WITH THE USE OF NOVELS. Historical fiction is not the first book my students reach for in any of my four sections of 7th grade American History. It is my challenge to help students realize the events in history is not limited to dates and outcomes, but rather the results of people like them that wanted a better world for themselves and future generations. Through your generous donation, you can help students from this high-need community begin to understand the details of a historic event as it effects a family from Connecticut.

An opportunity to incorporate literature, such as this, provides an entire grade level additional depth to explore the reasons for war and the results of personal choices. This novel will help create the setting and circumstances through which students will experience the events that occurred. Social Studies cannot be taught in a vacuum, but rather must be experienced through a variety of ways.

Literature is one of the keys to elevating students to higher order thinking, while developing empathy and understanding toward those who fought for us. This gift would provide a springboard into a new yet familiar world, hopefully reaching that student who has yet to see the real sacrifice our country has made for the true American Spirit.

Your gift will not end with just one use. Providing a set like this will be able to impact future seventh graders and help them see the importance of the human aspect of history. I thank you for your kind consideration.
