This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle school has over 1200 students. I love middle school age students because they are at that stage of development where their bodies are changing and you can't learn about your bodies on Snap-chat, Instagram, or even from your friends. Our students live in a densely populated area in the city of Houston. Many of them have parents who are non-English speaking. The opportunity to bridge a gap between the medical field and the population of Hispanic and low-income students would be amazing. For instance, all 409 of our 7th grade students have to be screened for Acanthosis Nigracans. I can tell them about it, but when I show them the poster and start talking about AN, they start asking serious, meaningful questions. How encouraging to learn something about their own bodies from wall posters. Our students are open to learn and need to be able to have talking points. I feel the Human anatomy posters will allow the students visual references in a clinic setting. Let's get learning, students, it will be fun!

My Project

The posters added to the clinic will allow students to see and recognize the human anatomy and allow for them to ask questions in reference to their open bodies. For instance, the diabetic students can learn about the pancreas and how insulin is processed. Another example is how the respiratory system is effected by asthma and smoking.

Middle school students don't approach conversations about their bodies to their parents, but rather their peers.

These human anatomy posters can foster curiosity and allow for an open dialogue about their own bodies.
