This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are filled with curiosity about different parts of the world. Not a day goes by where they don't reference Greek Mythology, Egypt, Mexico, or some other place they dream of visiting.

My students are sixth graders in a large urban school district.

Almost all students receive free lunch and free breakfast. They overcome many obstacles to simply come to school. Once they arrive, I try to provide them with interesting activities, novels, and lessons. My students enjoy hands on activities where they are able to learn through doing. They like reading in small groups, and having the opportunity to share their ideas with peers, the class as a whole, and me.

My Project

Since this class has proved so interested in all types of cultures and countries, I want them to be able to read "The Breadwinner". I want to nurture their curiosity by providing students with the book. This book will allow my students to see into the life of a young girl living in Afghanistan. I plan to have students do hands on activities with maps and hijabs, as well as create a writing piece comparing and contrasting their life with that of the girl in the book. Students will learn about a different culture, one that is relevant to current events. They will be able to understand similarities and differences among themselves and children their age in Afghanistan.

If my students are able to open their minds to a new world and become more understanding of other cultures, they will be in a great position for the future.

Having empathy for others is a skill that will be beneficial in school, as well as any career they choose.
