Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's lunch time and 80 degrees out, where do you find my students? In the library of course! I would have never imagined that junior high students would love the library. They love to hang out, to find the next novel of the series, to quiz me on my latest read, and create a wish list of great books.
The students at our small school are kind, creative and compassionate.
They all participate in our Accelerated Reading program and are encouraged to set challenging and realistic quarterly goals. This programs naturally pushes the students to read, but it also fuels a passion for reading. I love to see the students sitting together talking about books and promising to read their book fast so their friend can read it.
To be able to watch the students encourage each other, help each other, and care for each other is incredible, especially in a junior high setting. My students an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a group of readers excited and ready to read each year!
My Project
The students are required to read books and take quizzes to earn points each quarter. To get full credit, they must meet or exceed their reading goal. This can be difficult for many of my students.
The purpose of the book club is help students read different authors and find a style of writing they love.
Many students do not know what they like to read. My job is to help them find a book they're interested in. The Book Crew will pick a different author each time and read books by that author. We will then discuss writing styles and themes. Are all the books same genre? Do the books have similar story lines? I have chosen to kick off the book club with S.E. Hinton.
I am confident the students here will be excited for this new club. It will help broaden their reading minds. I plan on transforming the library into a little cafe once a month. We will have our lunch and discuss the books. I will have the art supplies out and we might create story boards or posters about the authors. We will let our creativity flow.
The best part of the book club, is at the end of the month, they will be able to test on their book and contribute to their quarterly reading goal while having fun.
