My students need more books for our classroom library with characters who look like them. I also added a long-handled stapler and a book binding machine to make class projects easier to manage.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students have parents who come from different countries and speak many different languages. As a result, I have a diverse group of students who like all other children have a strong desire to learn. As teachers, in the hustle and bustle of day to day work, sometimes we forget to celebrate the sparkle that each child processes. Each day, my students amaze me with their growth and challenge me with their questions. I want everyone to see their potential and acknowledge their effort. With all that said, changes are happening and I see that the future is bright for my students.
My Project
These materials will give students access to books where the main characters look like them. So often, curriculum books do not have diverse book characters. I work at a school where teachers as responsible for building a classroom library. These additional books would be cherished in my room. I want my students to see that they can do anything with a little imagination and effort no matter the color of their skin. I also would like to focus on creating authors in my classroom. As a result, I have asked for a book binding machine and a long handled stapler to make projects in my class and the 2nd grade easier to manage. Students will be able to instantly "publish" their work to share with classmates and family.
