Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Tenth grade students engage in a dynamic and culturally relevant curriculum in World Literature at our school. These students are predominantly from Hayward and Oakland and come from working class, immigrant backgrounds. Currently students are exploring their 'roots' and using literature as a way to tap into their histories and understand common struggles that all humans experience. With this DonorsChoose campaign, students will be given their own copy of "The Bluest Eye." Few students have many novels of their own, and they gain much by being able to take their books home and begin building their own library. This book will be students' third of the year, and I'm excited for them to have their own copy.
My Project
The Bluest Eye is the final book of the year for 10th grade literature. We explore issues of race and class in this unit and all student really appreciate having their own book to explore these topics. Prior to this book, you have helped fund our books on the Japanese internment and the Holocaust. For the our final project, your funding this project will allow students to have their own copy of The Bluest Eye. Thy will connect historically on the Jim Crow era of the US, and connect to themes of race, class, and beauty. Morrison's book is relevant now more than ever.
