My students come from a variety of backgrounds that shape their learning experiences and contribute to that of their peers. Like many students, mine are excited about the hands-on and innovative approaches to their learning in order to not only comprehend the concepts they need to know but to have fun while doing it.
My students also strive to find new ways of incorporating alternative methods to our lessons that make them relatable to what interests them and to ensure that those lessons have a lasting impact beyond the current school year.
This would be a cross-curricular project that would aim at combining financial literacy, social studies, and art into a lesson that would engage learners and help them grasp the concepts behind the widespread impact of the New Deal during the Great Depression till today. This project would have the students explore how although the New Deal was meant to focus on combating the causes and impacts of the Great Depression, it reached farther than the general scope of economics and even impacted projects, like our National Parks through the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration.
The project would have students exploring the different ways the CCC and the WPA provided for improvements and infrastructure in our National Parks.
The students will pick a specific park that benefited from the New Deal and design a WPA inspired travel poster for the park, while also researching how the park improved as a result of the New Deal. Students will then present their artwork and on how the park benefited from these efforts. At the end of the presentations, the students will then explore how other government actions in history and today have provided economic support, like the New Deal, indirectly. While focusing on the aspects of economics, students will be able to explore the financial literacy aspect of the lesson by exploring how the New Deal attempted to address and provide for the different budgetary requirements individuals were needing during the Great Depression to continue their daily lives and support their families. This will also be a comparison on how their budgetary requirements relate to today and how the government through various actions may still provide support for individuals and their needs.
