My Students

I live and teach in the diverse neighborhood of Sherman Oaks, California. My students are inquisitive, bright, and hard working. They love having the opportunity to explore new topics, ideas, and materials. I have students that come from all different economic and cultural backgrounds. They speak many different languages and their backgrounds are as diverse as their personalities.

My students are ready to become the next leaders of their school, community, and nation.

They strive to follow our two class rules daily, work hard and be kind. They are of the mindset that even if they don't know something, they want to put the work in to find out. I am proud of my students and excited for what the future holds for them.

My Project

These materials will help me in planning meaningful lessons on writing. In second grade, we focus on three types of writing: narrative, expository, and opinion. Using mentor texts to teach these genres of writing exposes kids to real stories and real authors to help inspire their own creativity.

Starting to write a story is one of the hardest tasks that a child can take undertake.

If they have a mentor text, children can see how authors construct stories from beginning, to middle, to end. Using these books will not only show students that writing can teach, but also inspire creativity and guide them into their careers as authors.
