This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come excited to learn in two languages as part of our Spanish Immersion Program, which was adopted more than 12 years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Eight years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bi-cultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
This book vending machine will be used as a school-wide incentive. This will be part our school wide PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) incentive. Prek-5th grade students will have the opportunity to earn a special token for showing one of our school's 3Rs: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Do the Right Thing. At the end of the week, each class selects a student of the week that has demonstrated one of the 3Rs. In addition, students can also earn a special token by reaching reading goals, demonstrating positive behaviors, perfect attendance, and by showing kindness. The opportunities are endless on how we can promote reading in our school community.
This book vending machine will create an atmosphere of excitement for reading at our school as we transition back from virtual learning to in-person learning.
Students will be able to earn a token to use in the vending machine for a book as a reward. The vending machine will be available for students to select their own books. The best part is that students will be able to keep the book and take it home to add to their own personal library. Books will be available in English, Spanish, and other languages when possible like Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, etc.
Please help us bring an Inch the Bookworm Book Vending Machine to our school to help our students get excited about reading in a fun and rewarding way!
