The Best Breakfast Nutrition Project

My students need some small appliances with which we could prepare nutritious foods to optimize their health, their energy, and their focus so they can learn.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. W.'s classroom raised $408

My Students

A car with dirty oil and a gas tank low on gas will never make it cross country! Achieving a 21st Century Education, therefore, requires a nutritious start to the day! My preschoolers need to "fill up" and learn about healthy foods that will keep them energized and focused on their destination!

Many of the children in my class are from low income families, but across all the socioeconomic groups, breakfasts we see brought to school consist of sugary drinks with artificial colors and toaster pastries, mini muffins, donuts, honey buns, etc., full of preservatives and trans fat.

The food choices reflect either what their families could afford or what they lack in information about healthier options. When they have experience with the healthier foods, preschoolers usually love to eat them, especially fruits, like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, melons, grapes, etc. They also love to prepare food, so we will start "The Best Breakfast Project," helping them to prepare, from "scratch," their own whole food and simple breakfasts, like whole grain pancakes, eggs, vegetable omelets, organic whole grain oatmeal, and quinoa. They also like fresh squeezed juices and smoothies but to prepare these foods and drinks we need the appropriate appliances, like a blender, a juicer, and an electric griddle.

My Project

Learning to prepare and cook meals is not only a creative experience for children, but also a multi-sensory, enjoyable one that helps them to learn about liquids, solids, measurement, and cause and effect, in addition to nutrition. With a juicer, a blender, and a griddle on hand, and with adult supervision, the children will be experimenting with various ingredients, such as a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, eggs, grains, and nuts, to create an endless number of delicious, healthy, nutrient-dense breakfasts (fresh juices, smoothies, omelets, whole grain pancakes, etc.) that have aesthetic and aromatic appeal. They will learn that "healthy" is delicious and fun. They will note changes in ingredients as they become observably different in texture and shape. Best of all, the children will be able to sample the foods in different forms--raw/cooked, whole/ juiced, plain/combined--so that they are equipped to make educated decisions with regard to their own food choices at home.

By donating to this project, you will help young children learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices at an early age, to explore the innumerable food choices available, and to discover that "healthy" not only tastes good, but feels good, too!

Thank you for your support of a far-reaching project that has the potential to extend health/nutrition information into the community through the children when they share information and request the foods that they experience in school, at home.
