This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a first-grade teacher in Massachusetts. My first-grade inclusion students come to school eager to learn but are facing many challenges both at home and in school. Despite their challenges, these children come to school everyday with smiles on their faces, eager to learn!
Five of my seventeen students have IEPs, many of them come in to school lacking basic resources, & all of my students receive a reduced-price lunch.
These students are amazing young individuals and hard workers. Their energy and love of learning surprises me everyday! My classroom supplies are limited and many teachers in our school require funding for basic tools to support our teaching and their learning. We so desperately need basic supplies to help our kids succeed. Please consider funding our project to help out some great kids.
My Project
In our First Grade classroom, we have a very limited amount of biographies that I have collected over the past few years. While these texts are good and decent texts, they have been used over and over, year after year. These books also do not depict many persons of color.
Most of our classroom library books have characters that are historical figures, but we are lacking books about famous African Americans.
Books depicting strong, brave, and inspirational black and brown leaders would be helpful for my African American scholars to see. Adding more diverse biographies to our classroom library will add more meaningful texts and my scholars will be able to see themselves in these amazing figures!
