My Students
My students are bright, creative, and intelligent students ages 5 through 12 years of age, who love art work. I teach kindergarten through 6th grade at two elementary schools. We are a diverse school of diverse needs.
Calligraphy would allow my students to see handwriting as not only a form of communication, but as a form of beauty and art.
I have several self contained classrooms with special needs students. My classes of self-contained students would especially benefit from a tool that works like a pen with the fluidity of paint. Calligraphy pens are a reusable resource that is cost effective and can be shared by 750 students at both schools for many years to come.
My Project
My students would benefit greatly from a class set of traditional metal calligraphy nibs and holders for ink so that they could experience the authentic tradition of historical calligraphy. This is a renewable resource that can be reused for many years to come, and enjoyed by many students for many years to come. A unit on calligraphy will deepen the learning of my students about art, art history, and strengthen learning in a many ways. Research shows there is a link between handwriting and learning ability. Research suggests that the connection between writing and idea generation goes beyond increased hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. When children are asked to come up with ideas for a composition, the ones with better handwriting exhibit greater neural activation in areas associated with working memory — and increased overall activation in the reading and writing networks.
Calligraphy will provide a bridge for my students to historical tradition, to an art form that is dying out and is unfamiliar to most students.
Calligraphy would mean a connection to history through expression. Calligraphy would allow my students to further their studies to include learning the detailed strokes that make up script used in traditional lettering and to see handwriting, not just as a form of communication, but as a form of beauty and art.
